Usually, when a team sends a top prospect to the minors for more development to begin a season, it is just another transaction. For the Los Angeles Angels, such a decision is a surprise.
Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reported that the Angels optioned infielder Christian Moore to the minors. The 23-year-old Moore was the eighth overall selection in the 2024 MLB Draft.
The Angels have a history of rushing their top prospects through the minors, and Moore was not an exception. A consensus top-100 prospect heading into the 2025 season, Moore appeared in just 83 minor league games before making his major league debut on June 13.
Moore struggled during his rookie season for the Angels. He posted a .198/.284/.370 batting line in his 184 plate appearances, hitting seven homers and five doubles. Although Moore showed solid plate discipline with 19 walks, he also struck out 62 times as he was overmatched at the major league level.
Those struggles continued in spring training. Moore entered Saturday with seven hits in 43 plate appearances, hitting a home run and drawing three walks while striking out 11 times. Although Moore had been in the running for the Angels' vacancy at second base, he clearly needed more time in the minors.
The Angels' top prospect entering the 2025 season, Moore was regarded as a solid all-around player with plus power and a solid hit tool despite his aggressiveness at the plate. He could still develop into that player with more time and coaching. In a shift in their usual philosophy, the Angels are actually going to let him develop in the minor leagues instead of at the major league level.
