Daniil Medvedev produced one of the finest performances of his career to overcome World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz 6–3 7–6 in the semifinals of the Indian Wells Masters.

In a match he entered as the clear underdog, Medvedev delivered a performance for the ages, not only handing Alcaraz his first defeat of 2026 but also advancing to his third final in the desert.

Medvedev’s Aggressive Start

The match began with Medvedev playing far more aggressively than usual, taking the ball earlier and redlining both his backhand and forehand in a way rarely seen from him in recent matches. That approach earned him an early break, catching many by surprise, given his traditionally defensive baseline style.

The Russian carried that momentum throughout the opening set, controlling the rallies and serving efficiently. In the end, he wrapped up the set comfortably, six games to three, in just over thirty minutes.

Second Set Battle Ends in Tiebreak

As the temperature rose, Alcaraz appeared fatigued and short of answers. Still, the seven-time Grand Slam champion found a burst of energy midway through the second set and managed to break serve to take the lead. However, the momentum shift never fully materialized. Medvedev immediately responded by breaking Alcaraz in the very next game to level the set.

Both players created further chances on return, but neither could convert, sending the set into a tiebreak. While Alcaraz has built a reputation for thriving in tight moments, it was Medvedev who once again raised his level, racing to a 5–1 lead in the breaker.

Alcaraz saved two match points, but the deficit proved too large to overcome. Medvedev closed the match with a service winner, sealing his third career victory over the Spaniard.

Statement Win Ahead of the Final

Although Medvedev had already shown strong form in 2026, highlighted by title runs in Brisbane and Dubai, this victory officially signals his return to the very top tier of men’s tennis after a difficult 2025 season.

The Russian, who completely revamped his team last year, should now appear far more confident when facing the sport’s elite. That belief will be crucial when he takes on Jannik Sinner in the Indian Wells final.

End of Alcaraz’s Historic Streak

For Carlos Alcaraz, the loss brings an end to a historic 34-match unbeaten streak on outdoor hard courts that began at the Cincinnati Open last year. While the Spaniard will certainly be disappointed with the result, he remains comfortably the World No.1 player and has already captured two titles this season, including the year’s first Slam.

His focus now shifts to the Miami Open, where he will have an opportunity to gain significant ranking points after suffering an opening match exit at the event last year.
