Next World Baseball Classic will probably have ABS challenge after borderline calls

The United States' 2-1 win over the Dominican Republic in Sunday's World Baseball Classic semifinal was a masterful display of baseball, featuring elite pitching, dazzling glove work and the best players in the world playing the game at its highest level. It also featured the one thing baseball fans — players — hate the most: Borderline strike calls in pivotal moments that change the game.

There were multiple close calls on Sunday, including a called third strike to end the game with the tying run on third base.

It is enough to call into question why the ABS challenge system was not in use during the knockout portion of the tournament, and whether or not it will be the next time the tournament is played.

Borderline strike calls completely swung game in Team USA's favor

Mason Miller ended the game with another dominant ninth-inning performance that was concluded with a strikeout of Geraldo Perdomo.

It was a nasty pitch.

It also appeared to be ball four based on the K-zone on the broadcast, and would have likely been overturned to be ball four with the ABS challenge system in place.

That was not the only borderline call in the game.

Juan Soto was also called out on a strike three in the bottom of the eighth inning that looked to be below the zone.

Overall, home plate umpires are better than they often get credit for being. It is an incredibly hard job, and they are generally accurate. Sometimes, though, there are big calls in big moments that appear to get missed, and those are the calls that get all of the attention.

It is a big reason why the ABS challenge system is being introduced for regular-season games across Major League Baseball this season. The fact that the technology is there and is now being used at the highest level of the sport only makes sense that it would be used in situations like this. Especially if Major League Baseball wants this tournament to be considered a big deal and meaningful. You can not have controversial calls deciding games.
