Kansas City Chiefs star tight end Travis Kelce revealed some expected news when he confirmed last week that he was re-signing with the club to play through at least the 2026 season.
For an article published on Sunday evening, Mike Kadlick and Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated shared how the details of Kelce's one-year deal indicate that the future Hall of Famer may be planning to retire at some point after Kansas City plays its final game of the upcoming campaign.
"Kelce gets $12M fully guaranteed—$3M in base salary, and $9M in a series of roster bonuses," Kadlick and Breer explained. "One is a training camp bonus of $3M. The remaining $6M will come in per-game roster bonuses. But those are 90-man roster bonuses, and fully guaranteed. He doesn’t have to be active to get them. ...Kelce has minimum salaries built into dummy years in 2027 and 2028, with a $40M guarantee for 2028 vesting June 8 of next year—which will force the Chiefs to release him by then, and allow for them to spread the dead money out, since the date falls after June 1."
Kelce reportedly was always "going to turn down more money to stay in Kansas City" and with what's been his only team since the Chiefs drafted him in 2013. There's no reason to believe the 36-year-old would experience a change of heart about wanting to retire as a one-club man next year, but he and the Chiefs could work something out if he has another solid campaign and decides next spring he isn't ready to ride off into the sunset of retirement.
Kelce led the 2025 Chiefs with 76 receptions, 108 targets and 851 receiving yards that he tallied over 17 games. He and two others shared the team lead of five touchdown catches.
"The contract basically paves the way to retirement for Kelce," Kadlick and Breer added. "If that’s the path, after Kelce’s 14th season, the Chiefs would then quietly release him after June 1. If it’s not, then they’d obviously renegotiate well before then."
Kelce plans to marry entertainment superstar Taylor Swift during a ceremony that reportedly will take place when Chiefs players are enjoying their summer breaks. For what it's worth, Kelce acknowledged last week that Swift's many professional successes motivated him to want to keep playing after the Chiefs went 6-11 this past season.
