Tramon Mark's latest game-winner saves Texas from meltdown vs. NC State in First Four

Tuesday's First Four nightcap between the 11-seeds Texas and NC State was not the most pleasing to watch, but it came down to the wire in what turned out to be an instant classic.

Senior guard Chendall Weaver brought the energy with 11 points and 10 rebounds off the bench, but it was the heroics from senior guard Tramon Mark that helped the Longhorns escape with the 68-66 win over the Wolfpack.

Mark had a team-high 17 points (7-of-14 FG), but his most important shot of the day — a contested 19-footer — proved to be the game-winner with one second remaining.

After the Wolfpack knocked down three triples within one minute in the closing stretch, senior guard Tre Holloman hit one of two free throws to tie the game at 66 with 18 seconds to play.

That is when Mark put the game in his hands and drilled the clutch jumper, officially recording his fifth career game-winning shot to send the Longhorns into Thursday's first-round showdown against freshman sensation AJ Dybantsa and six-seed BYU.

Texas denied NC State's last-second attempt to get a shot off and escaped with the nail-biting win. When Mark was asked by sideline reporter Jenny Dell how he is able to be so clutch in the biggest moments, he said, "It's just routine for me really."

It is hard to deny that confidence after seeing Mark step up in a clutch situation once again. For Texas, it was fortunate that he was on its team considering the mistakes and poor shooting performance throughout the game.

Texas dominated on the glass, 45-33, but scoring droughts and an inability to close out what was once a 10-point lead showed why the Longhorns had to win their First Four game just to have a chance at the Round of 64.

While it was a sloppy game, Texas found a way to survive and will now set its sights on the Cougars. BYU is not exactly entering the Big Dance with a lot of momentum, either, with four losses in its last seven games. It is also without sharpshooter Richie Saunders, who suffered a season-ending torn right ACL in February.

Despite the short rest, Texas could play spoiler in that meeting on Thursday. It tried everything it could to give the game away to NC State, but with some March magic from Mark — someone who has proved to have a knack for the big moments — the Longhorns will get another chance to keep dancing.
