Vikings' Kevin O'Connell seemingly has big Kyler Murray wish amid J.J. McCarthy uncertainty

Officially, Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell plans to have recently signed quarterback Kyler Murray compete with 2024 first-round draft pick J.J. McCarthy for the starting job later this summer.

Many noteworthy members of the NFL community believe Murray will "win that job in Minnesota and distance himself from [McCarthy] relatively quickly." NFL insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated suggested that O'Connell sees Murray as more than just an upgrade for the 2026 season.

Do Vikings view Kyler Murray as potential long-term answer?

"While Murray still has to win the job from McCarthy, what O’Connell said to Murray did stick with him — that he was the one guy on the market that they could see as a potential longer-range answer, rather than a one-year Band-Aid," Breer wrote. "The idea of growing with (wide receiver) Justin Jefferson, (receiver) Jordan Addison, (tackle) Christian Darrisaw and O’Connell and his staff was already wildly attractive to begin with. The chance to, perhaps, put down roots only made it more so."

McCarthy spent his entire rookie campaign recovering from a full meniscus repair, then left much to be desired with his play over 10 total regular-season starts. Throughout the winter, multiple reports have detailed his supposed struggles with aspects of serving as a potential franchise quarterback from last summer through January 2026. Some have wondered if both McCarthy and the Vikings could soon agree that a divorce is what's best for all involved, even though Minnesota allegedly is "not ready to give up on" the 23-year-old.

J.J. McCarthy sent clear Kyler Murray warning

Murray's one-year contract with the Vikings is worth only $1.3M because the Arizona Cardinals owed him $38M in fully guaranteed money for next season. On Tuesday, NFL writer Mike Jones hinted that O'Connell views Murray as more than a lottery-ticket option.

"Murray isn’t some journeyman middle-of-the-road talent," Jones explained. "He has game-changer ability. McCarthy very well could find himself relegated to the bench while O’Connell uses Murray’s experience and athleticism to take the Vikings’ offense to another level. Murray is on a one-year deal, but if he shines, he could secure an extension, which would likely send McCarthy packing."

In short, it sounds like it is at least possible that McCarthy has taken the last regular-season snap of his Minnesota tenure.
