If anyone was expecting Louisville Cardinals freshman point guard Mikel Brown Jr. to return for the opening weekend of the NCAA Tournament, think again.
On Wednesday, ESPN college sports insider Pete Thamel reported that the 2025-26 third-team All-ACC selection won't play in the round of 64 against the 11-seed South Florida Bulls (25-8, 15-3 in American) or in the round of 32, should the Cardinals advance.
That's hardly a certainty facing a South Florida squad that enters March Madness winners of 11 in a row, winning both the American regular-season and conference titles.
Louisville will be without star freshman Mikel Brown Jr. in the opening weekend of the NCAA tournament, the school announced. He's been dealing with a back injury and will not play against No. 11 South Florida and will also not play if Louisville advances.

Brown has been one of several outstanding freshmen to crash the 2025-26 season. The five-star prospect out of high school was the No. 6 overall recruit of the 2025 cycle, per 247Sports. He's second on the team in scoring, averaging 18.2 points per game, while adding a team-high 4.7 assists and 1.2 steals per game.
Brown has missed 12 games this season, including the last four with a back injury, and the team's splits with and without the star guard are notable.
| Wins |
Losses |
PPG | PPGA | FG% | 3P% | |
| w/ Brown (21 games) |
16 | 5 | 88.2 | 72.6 | 47.4 | 37.2 |
| w/out Brown (12 games) | 7 | 5 | 78.7 | 71.5 | 46.3 | 32.7 |
The Cardinals are one of the most prolific three-point shooting teams in the country, accounting for 52.8 percent of their shot attempts, per KenPom, the country's fourth-highest rate. Without Brown, the team shoots 4.5 percentage points worse from deep.
During their 11-game win streak, the Bulls have held teams to 32 percent from beyond the arc, including their five March opponents to 25.4 percent, which ranks 34th in Division I since the start of the month. (h/t Stathead)
Louisville (23-10, 11-7 in ACC) will rely on its veteran leadership to get through the first two rounds. Seniors Ryan Conwell, J'Vonne Hadley and Isaac McKneely all average double-figures, with Conwell scoring a team-high 18.7 points per game.
Hadley (11.8 points per game) ranks second on the team in rebounds (5.2 per game), while McKneely is shooting 38.1 percent on 6.8 three-point attempts per game. He'll need to take on an even higher volume in Brown's absence.
South Florida starts four guards and plays at a brisk pace, ranking 15th in adjusted tempo, according to KenPom, which could test Louisville's depth. The post battle between American Conference Player of the Year Izaiyah Nelson (6-foot-10, 215 pounds) and Sananda Fru (6-foot-11, 250 pounds) will also be amplified.
The red-hot Bulls are more than capable of sending the Cardinals to an early exit, which would make Louisville's third consecutive first-round loss. The program hasn't advanced past the opening weekend since reaching the Elite Eight in 2015.
Head coach Pat Kelsey, in his second season, is 0-5 all-time in the NCAA Tournament, losing twice in the round of 64 at Winthrop (2017, 2021) and College of Charleston (2023, 2024), and in his first season at Louisville a season ago.
His job is a lot more difficult with Brown sidelined. Thanks to a tough first-round matchup, Louisville's NCAA Tournament run might end soon after it begins.
