Even though the Kentucky Wildcats played their way into the NCAA Tournament as a No. 7 seed, they were still one of the more underwhelming teams during the 2025-26 season and fell way short of preseason expectations. Adding to the pressure the team is facing is the rumored price tag that the program spent on its roster.
Kentucky is said to have spent as much $22 million in NIL money on this year's team, a number that led to the team being called out by Dick Vitale for not being able to build a better roster with that amount of money.
On Thursday, one day before they open their NCAA Tournament run begins against No. 10 seed Santa Clara, head coach Mark Pope tried to push back against the distraction the NIL discussion has created.
It was not a convincing argument.
Pope tried to take the angle that you can't always trust media reporting, but wouldn't really offer any sort of a counter to the financial numbers that have been reported about Kentucky's spending. The program has also taken no serious efforts to leak out whatever the actual dollar figure is, which would only seem to further confirm how much they are spending. It's not hard for teams to get that information out if they want to do so, and Kentucky has made no real effort to dispute the number.
But what Pope really seemed to take exception to on Thursday was Michigan star Yaxel Lendeborg saying Kentucky offered him between $7 million to $9 million to play for the program this year when he transferred away from UAB. Pope again tried to focus on his issue with accuracy in reporting, while refusing to address whether or not Kentucky ever made such an offer.
“I know that you guys have to come out here with a headline,” Pope said. “I am not going to give it to you. But I would appreciate it if it was some segment of the media that is like, let’s actually search for like — I don’t know. I am trying not to make a commentary on it. This is all part of the distraction that my team is not a part of. We will try and embrace the circus nature of this and count on some responsible media member somewhere to actually kind of dig in and find out, or just be responsible reporting.”
The problem is this was not some anonymous report from a random person, or even an established reporter. It was a direct comment from the player himself, on the record. That is a pretty good source, and one that would have been easy for Pope to refute.
He did not.
It is also not hard to understand why he is pushing back so hard on this.
If Kentucky did spend that amount of money, and if it did make that sort of offer to Lendeborg, all of that would make the program and the job he did this season look significantly worse. Because why wouldn't a top transfer want to play for Kentucky at that price tag? Why hasn't he done more with such a highly paid roster?
There is always going to be pressure at Kentucky and an expectation to compete for national championships. Money only adds to that pressure. When the team fails to meet expectations, the coach is going to try to downplay the money they actually spent. Even if it is not a very convincing argument.
