For the second time in as many seasons, the North Carolina Tar Heels won't get past the NCAA Tournament's Round of 64.
Hubert Davis' team seemed to be in control of the game, leading No. 11 VCU by 19 in the second half. Then, their sixth-man rotation and a cold-shooting streak led to an 82-78 collapse by the No. 6 seed.
This was the second time the Tar Heels blew a double-digit halftime lead in the tournament, and both times have come under Davis' watch. That's why, with all the rumblings about his future in charge of the program, senior guard Seth Trimble came to his defense.
"He's been my coach for four years, and he has helped me grow," Trimble told WRAL's Pat Welter after the game. "He's helped me persevere. He's helped me become a better man. Everybody has their flaws. You know, Coach Davis, he isn't the perfect coach, but he's a coach who has made me better. He's a coach who has made guys better, and he's shown that he can win here."
Trimble, who just played the final game of his collegiate career, vowed to keep having his coach's back amid all the criticism he's bound to get in the next days and weeks.
"I know he gets hate," Trimble said. "Over the last four years, I know he's gotten a lot of it. But I'll continue to ride with him."
The Tar Heels finished the season on a three-game losing streak after losing star freshman Caleb Wilson due to a thumb injury.
Davis has coached the Tar Heels to a 125-59 record with just one Final Four appearance in five years with the program, and while that might be good enough for most schools, that's not going to cut it for the Tar Heels.
