The Houston Rockets picked up a thrilling 123-122 win over the Miami Heat on Saturday night, thanks in part to a strong fourth quarter that saw them overcome a nine-point deficit when it began. It was a huge win for the team. It was also a significant night individually for Kevin Durant.
With his team-leading 27 points, Durant officially moved ahead of Michael Jordan for the fifth spot on the NBA's all-time scoring list.
As of Saturday, the only players in NBA history who have tallied more points than Durant are LeBron James (43,229 and counting), Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (38,387), Karl Malone (36,928) and Kobe Bryant (33,643).
Any time a player passes Jordan in anything and puts themselves on a tier with the four players mentioned above, it is a significant accomplishment and a huge deal.

It does not mean that Durant is a better overall player than Jordan (because nobody would make that argument), and it took him more than 100 additional games to get there, but it is still a meaningful moment and a testament to how great a scorer Durant has been throughout his career. He is probably one of the best pure scorers that has ever done it, and certainly among his peers in his era.
The question now becomes how much higher can he climb? He is 37 years old, which is obviously closer to his retirement than the start of his career, but he is still getting between 1,600 and 2,000 points per season. He is with 1,400 points of Bryant in the No. 4 spot, so it seems quite possible, if not likely, that he could pass him next season. Getting ahead of Malone would require another 4,000 points, which might be another two or three seasons. That seems a little tougher. James and Abdul-Jabbar are almost certainly out of reach.
Even so, getting yourself into the top-five, and potentially the top-four or top-three all-time, is one heck of a career and puts you among the NBA's all-time greats.
