Latest Hubert Davis report indicates beleaguered HC should be leaving North Carolina soon

Moving on from Hubert Davis wouldn't be unwarranted for North Carolina 

Davis replaced three-time national champion Roy Williams as HC after he retired following the 2020-21 season. Initially, it appeared North Carolina had picked the right successor. The coach led the Tar Heels to the 2022 national championship game, where they lost to the Kansas Jayhawks, 72-69. Since then, he has failed to deliver on that promise. 

Davis has gone 125-54 in five seasons with the Tar Heels, but he has been eliminated from the first round of the NCAA Tournament twice and has a 4-6 record against the Duke Blue Devils, North Carolina's biggest rival. 

Davis' lack of signature wins ties to his inability to maximize the talent on his rosters. Entering the 2022-23 season, North Carolina was ranked as the No. 1 team in the country. And yet, the Tar Heels went 20-13, missing the Big Dance, becoming the first to do so since 1985.

This season, the Tar Heels lost star freshman forward Caleb Wilson (19.8 points per game) to a season-ending broken right thumb during practice on March 5. Before that, he had fractured his left hand in a 75-66 loss to the Miami Hurricanes on Feb. 10. If he had been healthy, North Carolina could've made a deeper run. 

Great coaches, however, find ways to overcome key injuries. They also accomplish more than Davis has in Chapel Hill. Moving on from Davis will allow North Carolina to target one of those coaches, who could help the program close the gap with Duke and reestablish itself as a college basketball powerhouse.
