Last week, different stories linked the New York Jets with former Penn State Nittany Lions quarterback Drew Allar and Ty Simpson of the Alabama Crimson Tide.
It sounds like individuals within the Jets may have a different prospect in mind regarding the sport's most important position.
On Sunday, ESPN's Rich Cimini revealed that Jets general manager Darren Mougey was scheduled to meet with Miami's Carson Beck ahead of Beck's pro-day workout on Monday. For a piece published on March 1, ESPN's Jordan Reid said that he felt Beck is the favorite to be the third quarterback drafted in April.
"Round 3 seemed to be the most likely range for him," Reid added about Beck.
Back on March 17, ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. predicted that the Jets would grab Simpson with overall draft pick No. 16. Former NFL quarterback and current analyst Dan Orlovsky has repeatedly made it known this offseason that he is a big Simpson fan, but some think Simpson could slide all the way to the draft's second round.
People within the Cleveland Browns reportedly "like" Simpson, but it's unclear if they like him enough to keep him from falling to the Jets at any point during the player-selection process.
Simpson recorded only 15 starts during his college career. On Sunday, Cimini indicated that it could play a role in the Jets looking elsewhere for a developmental prospect.
"Since 2011," Cimini wrote, "six of the seven first-round quarterbacks with fewer than 17 college starts didn't pan out in the NFL: Jake Locker (12), Christian Ponder (12), Anthony Richardson Sr. (13), Mitchell Trubisky (13), Blaine Gabbert (13) and Dwayne Haskins (14). The lone exception was Cam Newton (14), the 2015 NFL MVP."
Per Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk, Beck started 16 games at Miami last season. He previously started 27 games for the Georgia Bulldogs.
While the returning Geno Smith believes he could lead the Jets on a shocking run to a Super Bowl title, recent history suggests he won't be the club's starter for longer than a season or two. Taking a flier on Beck and then allowing him to sit behind Smith until at least 2027 could ultimately benefit the Jets beyond what could become another losing campaign for the organization.
