Donovan Mitchell exceeds 40 points as Cavaliers extend win streak

In leading the Cleveland Cavaliers to their fourth straight win, a 136-131 victory over the Orlando Magic, Donovan Mitchell reached a major individual milestone once again.

On Tuesday night, Mitchell scored 42 points in 35 minutes, reaching at least 40 points in a game for the sixth this time this season. Mitchell was 14-of-22 from the field and 3-of-7 from long range, also adding two rebounds and three assists to his persona line.

He now has two 30-point performances in March, starting the month off with 30 on March 8 against the Boston Celtics.

Donovan Mitchell is no stranger to big point totals

Mitchell, 29, who owns a single-game career high of 71, achieved on Jan. 2, 2023, is getting hot at the right time. His latest big 40-plus-point game came after he scored 27 in a win in New Orleans on March 21.

Mitchell's season high came back on Dec. 12 when he put up 48 against the lowly Washington Wizards.

In 63 games so far this season, Mitchell is now averaging 28.3 points, 4.5 rebounds and 5.8 assists while shooting 48.0% from the field and 36.5% from three. If his scoring average holds, 2025-26 would become his most efficient since career-best of 48.4% from his first season in Cleveland in 2022-23.

Donovan Mitchell will face pressure to be at his best in the playoffs

But no matter how many points Mitchell scores during the regular season, he will be judged based on how he plays in the playoffs and how far he can lead the Cavaliers alongside new superstar teammate James Harden.

Thanks to Mitchell, the Cavaliers are 45-27 and hold the Eastern Conference's No. 4 seed. Cleveland's latest winning streak has moved the Cavaliers to within only 2.5 games of both the New York Knicks and Celtics for the second and third position, respectively.

Since entering the league as the 13th overall pick in 2017, Mitchell, a seven-time All-Star, has played in eight postseasons between his time with the Utah Jazz and Cavaliers, but he has yet to experience getting past the second round.
