Justin Rose has responded to being asked whether he believes that there is a genuine chance that Jon Rahm could miss the Ryder Cup in 2027.
Rahm, of course, is at the centre of a row with the DP World Tour. The Spaniard announced last week that he has withdrawn his appeal over the fines he has received since joining LIV Golf.
But with Rahm still not planning to pay those fines, there is now a major question mark over whether the 31-year-old will be part of the European side that contests the Ryder Cup at Adare Manor next year.
Rahm did not join the eight other LIV players in agreeing a deal with the DP World Tour that involved their fines being waived provided that they play in six tournaments on the European circuit.
The two-time major champion was not happy about those terms, particularly with the DP World Tour deciding two of the events the players will feature in.
Despite the stalemate, it is hard to imagine Rahm not playing in a Ryder Cup. However, when asked about the situation on the Golf Channel, Justin Rose – who played alongside Rahm in his first ever Ryder Cup match in 2018 – admitted that he would not be entirely shocked if he was not involved in Ireland.
“I think it is absolutely feasible, yeah. I think the line in the sand has been drawn. I think quite a few players have committed to the strategy that the DP World Tour has set forward in terms of paying the fines and/or playing some extra tournaments to help bolster the schedule. I think the DP World Tour is willing to work with Jon, so it’s going to take a bit of compromise. I hope we can find that common ground now,” he said.
“From my point of view, I think the DP World Tour’s stance is reasonable, in terms of if you play in one of their events, you’re clearly by nature weakening their tour and their opportunity to go out and create impact in the game of golf, so therefore, if you want to be a member of the tour, yes you get a fine. And I’ve been in that situation too, elsewhere, outside of the DP World Tour, and also been fined.
“I’m good with the strategy because clearly, they’re trying to make their tour as strong as possible.”
It is fascinating how the likes of Rory McIlroy and Rose have publicly defended the DP World Tour.
When Rahm first moved to LIV, McIlroy made it absolutely clear that the rules needed to be in place to ensure that the Spaniard could be on the team at Bethpage.
Perhaps the Europeans are sensing that they can win at Adare Manor without Rahm. The Americans have not won across the Atlantic since 1993.
Obviously, it would be a nightmare for the DP World Tour if Rose and McIlroy insisted that Rahm needed to be involved. It does appear to be a case of who blinks first now.
Rose’s stance is also understandable when you consider that he is highly likely to be the European captain in 2029 at Hazeltine.
He may already be having conversations with the DP World Tour hierarchy and Luke Donald about the role. So it would not be the wisest decision to go against those at Wentworth when it comes to their stance on Rahm.
