There's no indication that New York Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner came close to firing manager Aaron Boone after the club dropped three of four American League Division Series games to the Toronto Blue Jays in October 2025.
That said, the contract extension that Boone signed in February 2025 only runs through the 2027 season. Thus, some understandably are wondering if Boone will either be shown the door or extended again at some point over the next 12 months.
For an article published on Wednesday, Bob Klapisch of NJ Advance Media predicted that the Yankees will claim at least one World Series title under Boone. Perhaps more interestingly, Klapisch also suggested that Boone won't re-up with the Yankees.
"Our conversations often circle back to life after baseball," Klapisch wrote about Boone. "Boone is adamant about not turning into an industry lifer like Bobby Cox or Jim Leyland. Boone isn’t sure what he wants to do next, but he’s made it clear there won’t be a return to the broadcast booth. And the 52-year-old Boone is equally put off by the idea of managing into his 60s."
Since accepting the managerial job following the 2017 season, Boone has guided the Yankees to seven playoff appearances. However, the Yankees lost four of five games to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the only World Series the Bronx Bombers have played in under Boone (2024).
Fans have routinely clamored for Steinbrenner to part ways with both Boone and Yankees senior vice president/general manager Brian Cashman over the years. Early into spring training, Boone insisted he isn't bothered by "fanatical takes" related to his inability to end the Yankees' championship drought, which began after the 2009 World Series.
While Klapisch acknowledged that Boone "still needs a major triumph to rewrite his legacy," Klapisch added that Boone doesn't care "all that much about public opinion."
That may be true, but being the skipper of Yankees teams that routinely fail to achieve the ultimate goal has to be exhausting for any individual. Perhaps the real question is: Would Boone voluntarily walk away if Klapisch is wrong and the Yankees don't win a World Series over the next two years?
