MLB Opening Day is finally here. Now, with winter in the rearview, the Boys of Summer are coming out to play, and as they do so, there will be a firm target on the back of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Coming off back-to-back World Series wins and spending like money isn't an object, the Dodgers are front-runners again in 2026. It's everyone else's job to stop their team of perennial All-Stars and future Hall of Famers from completing the three-peat.
Every year, there are going to be surprises, good and bad. As it stands in March, here's a look at three teams poised to play spoiler to the Dodgers.
The Blue Jays had the Dodgers on the brink during the 2025 World Series. In what will go down as one of the best Fall Classics in recent memory, the Blue Jays fell in seven games, and at one point led the series three games to two. Now, Toronto is looking for some revenge.
Toronto is going to need to overcome the loss of shortstop Bo Bichette. To do that, they'll likely be turning to Andres Gimenez. Along with Gimenez, newcomers include star pitcher Dylan Cease and Japanese infielder Kazuma Okamoto.
It's not a sure thing that the Blue Jays will be back in the World Series. The AL East is a gauntlet, and they're already dealing with injuries, but who's to say Toronto can't take down the Dodgers?
The Phillies have been knocking on the doorstep of a World Series for a few seasons now. It's time to make that run before their window closes and this group of Phillies misses out entirely.
There are a few questions that Philadelphia needs to answer. Ranger Suarez moved on in free agency, and ace Zack Wheeler is starting the season on the IL. There's still talent there, and the bullpen should be improved, but that's two stars missing for the time being.
One thing the Phillies did well this offseason was retain key bats by bringing back Kyle Schwarber and J.T. Realmuto. There may also be some addition by subtraction, moving on from Nick Castellanos. Add Adolis García and the potential of rookie Justin Crawford, and the Phillies are NL East favorites again.
The Mariners aren't a team that competes for pennants year in and year out. In fact, since 2002, they've made the postseason twice, but those appearances happen to be in the last two seasons. A year ago, the Mariners took the Blue Jays to seven games in the ALCS. Now, it's time to get over the hump.
Seattle still has one of the best rotations in all of MLB. Logan Gilbert, George Kirby, Bryan Woo, Bryce Miller and Luis Castillo are arguably all at least a top two pitcher on other teams. On top of that, the Mariners boast an excellent bullpen to complement that unit.
You probably can't bank on catcher Cal Raleigh repeating his 2025 season where he had 60 home runs. However, more can be expected of Julio Rodriguez, Josh Naylor and Brendan Donovan, among others, to help get Seattle to the World Series.
