Kansas HC Bill Self addresses retirement rumors

It would make sense if longtime Kansas Jayhawks head men's basketball coach Bill Self decided to step away this offseason.

Self is 63 years old, and he has a history of health issues. Just this past season, he was hospitalized and had to miss a game due to a health issue.

Self has been at Kansas since 2003. He's a two-time NCAA Tournament champion and a two-time AP Coach of the Year.

Basically, he's done it all. That's why rumors have been circulating that Kansas' second-round exit in the NCAA Tournament to St. John's could be Self's last game as a head coach.

Those are rumors that Self denied on Wednesday, though, according to Gary Bedore of the Kansas City Star.

“No news. All b.s. Bad info,” Self told Bedore in a text.

Notably, Self didn't say he's coming back in 2026. It's also worth mentioning that after the Jayhawks' tournament loss, Self would not commit one way or the other to his future as a coach.

“No, I haven’t decided (on returning)," Self said, per Bedore. "I’ll get back and visit with family. I’ve had obviously some issues off the court health-wise. And that will be discussed. But I love what I do. I want to feel good while I’m doing it, though. We’ll get back and we’ll discuss that when we get back.”

If Self does retire, he'll go down as one of the best to ever do it.

He's gone 648-167 at Kansas, a winning percentage of .795%, and he's 855-272 overall as a head coach with previous stops at Oral Roberts, Tulsa and Illinois.
