Boston College makes historic news on men’s basketball head coach

Boston College has been stuck in the mud for years, and the program finally decided to do something about it. The Eagles moved on from Earl Grant after the season wrapped up, and it was hard to argue with the timing.

They haven't made an NCAA tournament since 2009, and the last time they posted a winning record was back in 2018 when Jim Christian squeezed out a 19-16 season. This year was more of the same.

The team finished 11-20 overall and went 4-14 in ACC games, landing them tied for second-to-last in the conference. They didn't make it to the ACC tournament.

Luke Murray lands Boston College job

But the search for a new direction might be over. Word broke on Thursday that Boston College has found its next leader on the sideline.

According to ESPN's Jeff Borzello, Luke Murray has been hired as the program's new men's basketball head coach.

Murray, the son of actor Bill Murray, has spent the past four seasons as an assistant at the University of Connecticut Huskies men's basketball. He was part of back-to-back national championship teams in 2023 and 2024.

Murray got his coaching career going at Post University in 2008. He's worked alongside Dan Hurley for years, starting at Wagner and continuing at Rhode Island before both landed at UConn in 2021.

Murray came to Storrs after a stop at Louisville, and he's been focused on running the offense ever since. During the 2024 title run, the Huskies ranked fifth in the country in shooting and second in assists per game.

This season, they're still putting up 48% from the field and averaging 18.4 assists. UConn enters Friday night's Sweet 16 game against the Michigan State Spartans men's basketball as a No. 2 seed.
