Alvaro Folgueiras and Iowa Hawkeyes make historic run to Elite Eight

The Iowa Hawkeyes are on a historic run through the NCAA Tournament, and they just picked up a classic win against one of their biggest rivals.

It was a gutsy performance by the No. 9-ranked Hawkeyes, who ultimately had more juice than the No. 4 Nebraska Cornhuskers when it mattered.

They won, 77-71.

In fact, there was a time in the first half when the Hawkeyes found themselves down 10 points. They rallied and went into halftime down just three.

From there, it was a back-and-forth battle in Nebraska in the second half until the final minute, when the Hawkeyes pulled away.

Iowa didn't get its first lead of the game until a three-pointer from Bennett Stirtz with 2:10 to go. The Hawkeyes held on to a slim three-point lead with under a minute to go after a Braden Frager three for Nebraska.

Then, Iowa exploded.

Alvaro Folgueiras has been a March Madness hero for Iowa Hawkeyes

Alvaro Folgueiras made an and-one on a beautiful full-court inbounds pass out of a timeout.

He then slammed home a massive dunk with 34 seconds left to put Iowa up eight.

Folgueiras has quickly become a legend for Iowa. A junior from Malaga, Spain, his three-pointer with 4.5 seconds left helped Iowa eliminate the defending national champion Florida Gators in the second round of the tournament.

He'll go down in Iowa history no matter how this run ends up for the Hawkeyes, but it has, without a doubt, been special for Iowa and first-year head coach Ben McCollum.

Iowa's upset win over No. 8 Clemson in the first round marked the program's first March Madness win since 2021.

This game against Nebraska was the first time since 1999 that the Hawkeyes have been in the Sweet 16. The Hawkeyes will now play in the Elite 8 for the first time since 1987.

It has been a historic run for the Hawkeyes, and they may not even be done yet.
