Despite a rough performance on Opening Day, Chicago Cubs infielder Nico Hoerner had a day to remember on Thursday.
ESPN's Jesse Rogers reported that the Cubs and Hoerner have agreed on a six-year extension. He was in the final year of a three-year, $35 million extension and was slated to reach free agency this offseason.
Hoerner is the second player to reportedly agree to a long-term extension with the Cubs this week. Outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong received a six-year extension as well on Monday, with his deal worth a reported $115 million. Financial details for Hoerner's extension, however, have yet to be made available.
Hoerner has been a solid part of the Cubs lineup with his ability to make contact and get on base. He has a .282/.340/.384 batting line in his 2873 plate appearances entering the 20256 season, hitting 36 homers and 128 doubles while stealing 131 bases.
His greatest value may be on defense. A two-time Gold Glove winner, Hoerner has been credited with 43 runs saved in his career. Hs is also capable of filling in at short if need be as he had been the Cubs' primary shortstop before they signed Dansby Swanson during the 2022-23 offseason.
Hoerner's combination of stellar defense and impressive contact skills have made him an important part of the Cubs lineup. His new extension will ensure that he remains in Chicago for the foreseeable future.
