A recent report revealed that some people within at least the Dallas Cowboys think that the Las Vegas Raiders could reopen the door for a trade of star pass-rusher Maxx Crosby if the Raiders are in the middle of yet another losing season this coming fall.
It sounds like Raiders general manager John Spytek won't be in a hurry to pull the trigger on such a transaction anytime soon.
For a piece published on Wednesday, Raiders reporter Hondo Carpenter of Sports Illustrated spoke with multiple NFL executives to learn more about new Las Vegas quarterbacks coach Mike Sullivan. One exec touched upon the relationship between the Raiders and Crosby after the Baltimore Ravens backed out of sending Vegas two first-round draft picks for the 28-year-old because he failed a physical for reasons related to a meniscus repair he needed in January.
"Someone from another team told me they did indeed call [Spytek] on Maxx," the executive said. "Unlike when they called before, the Raiders were willing to listen, but made it clear that it wasn’t something they were pushing or even trying to make happen."
Crosby reportedly has rescinded the trade request he submitted after the season, and an ESPN story from earlier in the week shared that "multiple Raiders sources say they'd be surprised if Crosby was traded in the short term." Understandably, that line could lead one to believe the Raiders may still accept two first-round selections from a team for Crosby's services.
"Based on what he said, I wouldn’t say they shut it down, but they weren’t encouraging it either," the executive told Carpenter about the Raiders' thoughts on a potential Crosby trade. "They were willing to listen, but not active."
Supposed concerns about a "degenerative issue" in Crosby's knee reportedly led to the Ravens scrapping their agreement with the Raiders. Crosby may not be cleared for football-related activities until "June or early July," but it sounds like he and the Raiders are on good terms heading into April.
"I think things are amicable," the executive said about Crosby's relationship with the Raiders.
