Andy Reid sounds non-committal on Patrick Mahomes' injury return

Once again, Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes proved that he's not wired like most people.

The former MVP went viral on social media for showing a video of him throwing the ball and moving around, just three months after tearing his ACL.

Mahomes is attacking his recovery aggressively to try to be there for the season opener. However, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid would rather not make any promises.

In an interview with NFL Senior National Columnist Judy Battista, Reid didn't want to make any progress about having Mahomes on the field in Week 1.

Patrick Mahomes may not be ready for Week 1

"He's doing great," Reid said, per Bobby Kownack of NFL.com. "He spends a ton of time in the building. ...He's in there for seven hours a day. It's showing, the progress. Now, to tell you a timeline? I mean, I know what he's striving for. We'll just see where it goes from there."

The Chiefs missed the playoffs in 2025 for the first time since Mahomes became their starter. In fact, it was also the first time that Mahomes didn't lead the Chiefs to at least the AFC Championship Game.

Of course, that streak was unsustainable. Even before his season-ending injury, the Chiefs' season was already on life support.

The Chiefs made a huge addition by signing Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III to revive their running game. That said, they still need to get another pass catcher, and defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo will have to get by without the departed Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson.

Even so, this team is operating as if Mahomes will be on the gridiron in Week 1. If that's not the case, it'll be the Justin Fields show to start the season in Missouri.
