Browns insider addresses if Andrew Berry is being honest about not trading Myles Garrett

It was reported ahead of the weekend that the Cleveland Browns had "promised" reporters that they aren't trading star pass-rusher Myles Garrett after the two parties agreed to change when option bonuses attached to his contract would be due.

On Sunday, Browns general manager Andrew Berry suggested he won't be trading Garrett this offseason and that "Myles is a career Brown." On the latest edition of the "Orange and Brown Talk Podcast," Browns beat reporter Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reacted to Berry's comments.

Can Myles Garrett trade talk be put to rest?

"He did actually say, and I put this in my headline, that Myles Garrett is a ‘career Brown,'" Cabot said about Berry. "I thought that was a pretty strong statement. And so I think that we can kind of put this trade talk to rest now."

Garrett went public with a trade request in February 2025 due to his desire to join a supposed Super Bowl contender. However, he later signed a four-year, $160M contract extension that included $123.5M guaranteed and a no-trade clause to remain with what's been his only NFL home since the Browns made him the first pick of the 2017 draft.

More recently, Garrett became a two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year after he set a new official single-season record of 23 sacks. Despite his stellar play throughout the 2025 campaign, the Browns ended Week 18 with a record of 5-12.

"Andrew is a pretty straight shooter when it comes to this type of thing," Cabot continued. "He’s not one to try to create subterfuge in this type of situation. When he says that Myles Garrett is a career Brown, I think he means that."

Why Browns may not be in a rush to trade Myles Garrett

Some have understandably assumed the Browns could look to acquire at least a couple of high-value draft assets in return for Garrett, who turned 30 years old this past December. Cabot seems to believe Cleveland's need for a long-term franchise quarterback won't impact how the club handles Garrett's status this offseason.

"He’s the engine, he’s the anchor, he’s what makes it go," Cabot added about what Garrett means to the Browns. "And so they certainly don’t want to mess with that while they are bringing the offense up to speed."

Needless to say, not every Cleveland media personality is convinced that Berry would reject a so-called "'Godfather' offer" for Garrett's services before the 2026 season gets underway.
