ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith is receiving both backlash and praise for his comments on Tiger Woods’ second DUI arrest.

Last Friday, Tiger Woods was involved in a rollover car crash in Jupiter Island, Florida. Though Woods and the driver of the other vehicle avoided serious injuries, the golf legend was arrested for driving under the influence, property damage and refusal to submit.

The 50-year-old Woods was taken into custody and eventually released later that evening. His mug shot was also released and quickly went viral.

Speaking on NewsNation’s “Cuomo” program, Stephen A. Smith went on a scathing rant against Woods for continuing to put himself in danger with his latest driving-related offense.

“Most of us would be in jail…He’s gotten away with a lot, and they’re sick and tired of it. You had this problem in 2017 when they found you sleeping in your car on the side of the road. You had this problem in 2021 when you crashed into a tree and tumbled over and almost got yourself killed.

You had this issue again last Friday. All three times…you’re inebriated and you’re behind the wheel of a car. Now, I think it’s safe to say, you’re Tiger Woods, you can afford car service. I think it’s safe to assume the man can afford car service.

What the hell are you doing getting behind the wheel of a car? Most of us would be in jail. Remember second incident in 2021. They didn’t even…they didn’t charge him. They didn’t make him take an alcohol, you know, breathalyzer test. They didn’t test his blood…any of that stuff. He was hospitalized. They left alone. So he’s gotten a lot of people’s eyes in America. He’s gotten away with a lot and they’re sick and tired of it.”

Woods avoided jail time after he was arrested for driving under the influence in May 2017. He was issued a small fine and ordered to perform community service. He faced no charges in his single-vehicle accident in 2021, though Woods required surgery after suffering multiple leg injuries.

Tiger Woods’ status for 2026 Masters is still up in the air

Before Woods’ second DUI arrest, golf fans were anxiously awaiting an announcement on his status for the 2026 Masters. Woods has spent the past 12 months recovering from a torn Achilles tendon he suffered during a training session at his home.

The five-time Masters winner still hasn’t announced if he’ll play in the 2026 Masters or not. This year’s tournament runs from April 9-12. For what it’s worth, Woods is still listed on the field.

Woods ended an 11-year major drought when he shockingly won the 2019 Masters. A long list of serious injuries, though, have prevented him from getting anywhere close to the mountaintop since.
