Oklahoma loses No. 1 RB recruit with Texas looming large

The Oklahoma Sooners had to have felt great when they landed a commitment from Micah Rhodes, a four-star 2028 running back out of Spring, Texas.

Rhodes is one of the best running backs in the 2028 class and one of the top recruits in the country overall. He committed to Oklahoma in January over the Texas Longhorns and Texas A&M Aggies.

It was an extremely early commitment for a player who had just wrapped up his sophomore season in high school, though, so it's not all that surprising that the decision has already been walked back.

On Wednesday, Rhodes reopened his recruitment. Notably, this comes after two visits to see Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns in recent weeks. It also comes a month after Oklahoma running backs coach DeMarco Murray left that job for the same position with the Kansas City Chiefs.

“To be honest with you, I don’t know, man,” Rhodes had told OU Insider in February, reacting to Murray’s departure. “It’s a lot of emotion going on right now. I’m happy for Coach, stepping his career up and going to do something that’ll help his career and help his family out and stuff like that. So I’m happy for him, but I obviously don’t know what to do… Me and my dad, we were talking about it. We’re talking to our agents, trying to get some closure on what’s going on right now and trying to get some ideas on what to do. But to be honest with you, we don’t know yet.”

It's not surprising that those visits to Austin came not that long after Murray's departure. Those visits also went really well for the Longhorns.

“Best visit I’ve ever had at Texas,” Rhodes told Rivals earlier this week. “I’ve been to Texas a few times and compared to all my visits there, this one was by far the best in comparison to all the other times. They’ve made an impression on me. I’m 100 percent sure Texas wants and believes in what I can do on the field.”

Now that he's officially decommitted from Oklahoma, the safe bet is that the four-star winds up back in Texas with the Longhorns.

Again, it is very early in his recruitment, though, so anything can happen.

According to 247Sports, Rhodes is the No. 1 running back in the 2028 class.
