Raiders' Klint Kubiak opens up about working relationship with Tom Brady

Shortly after the Las Vegas Raiders hired Klint Kubiak as their new head coach this past winter, he vowed that he would reach out to Raiders minority owner Tom Brady "a lot."

It appears Brady has been just fine with Kubiak's approach.

How often do Klint Kubiak and Tom Brady talk about the Raiders?

"I probably contact him once every two days," Kubiak said about Brady at the NFL’s annual meeting this week, as shared by Mike Kadlick of Sports Illustrated. "Or text back-and-forth, or call each other. [He’s] very supportive, obviously wants the Raiders to win, and is always trying to touch base with myself or with Spy [general manager John Spytek] on how he can help that process. So I love picking his brain, love hearing where he’s coming from. He’s given me so many pointers on experiences that he’s been through. So I’m taking notes, and I’m asking questions."

The exact nature of Brady's role as a minority owner of the Raiders generated numerous headlines during the offseason and amid the will-they-or-won't-they trade saga involving pass-rusher Maxx Crosby. At least one report claimed that Brady is seen "as the de facto boss when it comes to football matters" for the organization.

"He’s extremely supportive, giving great advice, talking about his experience in New England, things that he did in Tampa, and he’s just always giving great advice and being very supportive of me," Kubiak said of Brady, according to Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk.

What kind of help is Tom Brady offering Klint Kubiak?

Kubiak seems open to receiving advice from Brady on all aspects of the job. Earlier this week, Kubiak suggested that he would prefer if a quarterback such as Indiana Hoosiers star and presumed No. 1 overall draft choice Fernando Mendoza would spend at least part of his rookie season sitting and watching "a mature adult go and run an offense and run the team." Brady likely would be a fan of that plan.

"In all aspects of my job, I’m reaching out to him and asking for his advice, and he’s given advice," Kubiak added during his comments about Brady. "And I ask him to give advice I don’t want to hear — it’s OK to hurt my feelings. I’d rather it be that way. I have all the confidence in the world we’re going to keep building that relationship."

It remains to be seen how the development of that relationship will impact the decisions Kubiak makes during the season and on gamedays.
