The Toronto Blue Jays' injuries continue to pile up, with All-Star catcher Alejandro Kirk landing on the 10-day injury list. But this injury offers an opportunity to rookie prospect Brandon Valenzuela.
Valenzuela put up a good performance in camp, and while the Kirk injury stings, the 25-year-old Mexican has some upside. The Buffalo Bisons catcher has been called up and is looking forward to making his MLB debut.
The Blue Jays acquired Valenzuela from the San Diego Padres in the Will Wagner trade on July 31, 2025. He is a switch-hitter who will be the backup catcher for Tyler Heineman. They will likely split time behind the plate until Kirk returns.
While injuries don't enjoy having company in baseball, Valenzuela was already twisting Heineman's arm during camp, showcasing his offensive skills by batting .333. He's also shown strong defensive abilities with a one-knee-down technique and a caught-stealing rate that's been over 30% for the past three seasons.
That one catcher injury occurred much sooner than anyone would've liked, but Brandon Valenzuela is about to get his opportunity. https://t.co/d262XKVen5

Heineman was a productive piece of the Blue Jays' success as one of the best backup catchers who exceeded expectations last season. He slashed 289/.361/.416, along with three home runs and 20 RBI across 61 games.
His error in the Blue Jays' 5-4 loss to the Chicago White Sox on Friday was uncharacteristic of Heineman, who is usually a solid defensive player.
But Valenzuela offers a different profile than Heineman. Valenzuela has distinct skills as a younger catcher. While Heineman is a veteran at the age of 34 and establishes stability, Valenzuela will be a part of the Blue Jays' future, providing long-term value as well as offering more power at the plate.
