The Green Bay Packers and their general manager, Brian Gutekunst, have experienced a turbulent offseason so far. With the 2026 NFL Draft fast approaching, the team still faces several key gaps that need to be addressed.
This offseason, the Packers have seen several key players from last year depart. That list includes wide receiver Romeo Doubs, center Elgton Jenkins, linebacker Quay Walker, cornerback Nate Hobbs, pass rusher Rashan Gary, quarterback Malik Willis, and offensive tackle Rasheed Walker, leaving notable holes on both sides of the ball.
Gutekunst and the Packers have made some additions this offseason, with Gutekunst signing cornerback Benjamin St-Juste, defensive tackle Javon Hargrave, and return specialist Skyy Moore in free agency.
Linebacker Zaire Franklin was also acquired via trade from the Indianapolis Colts. Despite these moves, the team has lost more key players than it has added. To position themselves as serious Super Bowl contenders in 2026, the Packers will need to make additional strategic acquisitions.
With that in mind, cornerback has emerged as one of the most urgent areas Green Bay needs to address. Nick Baumgardner of The Athletic released his projections for the top 100 picks in the 2026 NFL Draft, and he has Green Bay using the No. 52 selection on a defensive back. His pick is Indiana Hoosiers standout D’Angelo Ponds.
Ponds played a pivotal role in the Indiana Hoosiers’ 2025 season, anchoring a defense that was central to their National Championship victory. Though he may be considered undersized, Ponds consistently plays with an impact well beyond his stature.
Adding a top-tier coverage cornerback is a priority for the Packers. While the 22-year-old might not reach elite status immediately in the NFL, his skills and experience suggest he could contribute effectively in a rookie role.
Ultimately, the Packers are in urgent need of reinforcement in the secondary. Ponds could be the player who provides a long-term solution to that weakness.
