Ladies and gentlemen, we have finally arrived. It is officially Masters week, and we can't wait for the action to get started at Augusta National Golf Club.
To kick off the week, let's break down the top storylines for the 90th Masters Tournament.
For years, McIlroy battled demons at Augusta National because he always had to answer questions about his inability to complete the career Grand Slam. Those questions no longer exist thanks to his dramatic victory in 2025, but returning to Augusta as the defending champion presents a different challenge.
This year, McIlroy has a much busier week leading up to his first tee time. He was in Augusta for the Drive, Chip and Putt Competition this past weekend, and he'll host the Champions Dinner for the first time on Tuesday. There are also questions about McIlroy's current form considering he withdrew from the Arnold Palmer Invitational with a back injury and hasn't played since the Players Championship nearly a month ago.
How will the reigning champ fare in this unfamiliar role?
Scheffler kicked off his 2026 season with a win at the American Express, but he hasn't played up to his typical standard since then. The World No. 1 ranks just 82nd on the PGA Tour this season in strokes gained on approach and 128th in total driving efficiency, which are jarring figures from the best ball-striker in the world for the last three years.

Scheffler has finished outside the top-20 in back-to-back starts, something he hadn't done since the summer of 2023. He also hasn't played since the Players Championship due to the recent birth of his second son. Scheffler is still the +500 favorite (FanDuel) to win the Masters, but there are a ton of question marks surrounding him this week.
Watch out for the LIV Golf duo at the 2026 Masters. Rahm has a win and three runner-up finishes in five LIV starts this year, while DeChambeau is coming off back-to-back victories on the rival golf tour. Both players also have a strong history with Augusta National, as Rahm won the tournament in 2023, and DeChambeau has contended in each of the previous two runnings.
There's a reason these two superstars are popular picks to win the green jacket this year.
Morikawa was trending to be a top-five contender at the 2026 Masters when he won the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February and notched back-to-back top-seven finishes right after. Now, we're not even sure if he'll tee it up this week.
After playing just one hole at the Players Championship, Morikawa tweaked his back and had to withdraw from the tournament. He planned to return a few weeks later but withdrew before the start of the Valero Texas Open.
If Morikawa is healthy, he's a serious threat to win the green jacket.
