The Michigan Wolverines are national champions.
In just his second year in charge of the program, Dusty May has turned it upside down, leading them to their second title in school history.
The Wolverines survived a rare off-night from the perimeter and UConn's late runs to secure a hard-fought 69-63 win and the first Big 10 men's basketball championship since 2000.
That's why, in a postgame interview with CBS Sports' Tracy Wolfson, May still needed someone to pinch him.
“It still doesn’t feel real. It feels like we have another game to prepare for,” May told Wolfson, per The Athletic.
Coach May also praised his players for their resiliency and for always finding a way to take care of business:
“If you had told me we would shoot it this poorly and dominate on the glass and still find a way to win, I wouldn’t have believed you. But this team’s just found a way all season,” he added.
Notably, six of eight rotation players arrived in Ann Arbor through the transfer portal, making this Wolverines team a perfect reflection of the state of the union in college athletics.
The transfer portal and the NIL era have shaken the game to its very core, for better or worse. They still had to build chemistry and figure out how to make all the new pieces mesh together, and that's on the coach.
Regardless, the Wolverines deserve all the credit in the world for their offensive dominance and for handing the UConn Huskies their first defeat in a national championship game.
