For the past two offseasons, star DL Dexter Lawrence II has been trying to get a raise with the New York Giants, but to no avail.
The team didn't rework his contract or trade him when his value was at an all-time high, yet he has now formally requested a trade.
That has put general manager Joe Schoen in a tough spot. For the first time in years, the Giants look ready to compete, and losing a player of Lawrence's caliber would be a massive blow to their defense.
That said, the Giants may not have much leverage in this situation. If that's the case, the Chicago Bears can't afford to let the two-time second-team All-Pro go elsewhere.
The Bears struggled to put pressure on the quarterback last season, and they're shaky in the interior of the defensive line. Granted, Lawrence is coming off the worst season of his career in terms of sack production (0.5), but he's got 30.5 in his seven-year career with the Giants.
The Bears have seven picks in this year's draft, including two second-rounders and one third-round selection, so they can afford to roll the dice on a true mauler to solve their defensive issues.
They gave up 134.5 rushing yards per game, ranking 27th in the league last season. Head coach Ben Johnson claimed that he was looking for "trained killers" to bolster the front seven.
Lawrence would be a significant upgrade over the aging Grady Jarrett, and while giving older players big contracts always comes with risks, Lawrence's steady production and physicality should do all the talking.
