The San Antonio Spurs will enter Wednesday night's game against the Portland Trail Blazers without two key players. Victor Wembanyama sat out after taking a rib contusion during Monday's contest, and Stephon Castle remained sidelined with soreness in his right knee.
The absences come at an awkward time for San Antonio, particularly for Wembanyama. He still needs two more games with at least 20 minutes played to qualify for the NBA's 65-game threshold for awards eligibility.
Only two games remain on the schedule after Wednesday. Friday against the Dallas Mavericks and Sunday versus the Denver Nuggets.
The situation drew attention during a recent segment of ESPN's "NBA Countdown," where Shams Charania offered an update on the 22-year-old's status.
"There's confidence that Victor Wembanyama will be able to play at least one of these final two games as soon as Friday against the Dallas Mavericks at home, potentially."
"The good news for the Spurs, test showed a bad bruise to his rib, and that can impact his breathing. So, right now, he is day-to-day, though. He needs to play at least 20 minutes in one more game. The Spurs, Victor Wembanyama, very confident that he'll be able to do so."
Tests revealed a bad bruise but nothing more serious. That leaves the door open for Wembanyama to suit up by Friday.

Wembanyama's workload drew plenty of conversation this season. He put together a strong campaign but never crossed the 40-minute mark in a single game. The Spurs treated the regular season as a buildup toward the postseason, which aligns with the franchise's long-standing focus on player health and development.
Wembanyama missed time in December because of an injury, which only reinforced San Antonio's careful approach.
Still, there are signs of a shift. During an overtime game in Denver over the weekend, he came close to hitting 40 minutes. That suggests the coaching staff is preparing him for heavier usage. Once the playoffs arrive, limiting his minutes could become far more difficult.
