The Los Angeles Lakers have had the full Deandre Ayton experience since signing him in the offseason.
Despite his glaring physical gifts, his inconsistency on offense and lack of effort on defense have made him a frustrating player to watch for most of his career. That hasn't been the exception this season, and it looks like head coach JJ Redick doesn't want to save face about it anymore.
Following the Lakers' 123-87 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday, Redick shared a rather simple reason why he didn't lean more on the former No. 1 pick.
"He's having trouble catching the ball," Redick said after the game (h/t Oh No He Didn't). "We ran a bunch of plays for him. He's just had trouble catching the ball."
Ayton had just three points and three rebounds in 23 minutes. He's averaged 12.2 points and 8.0 rebounds per game in 69 appearances wearing purple and gold.
That said, this isn't necessarily surprising, given that his lack of physicality and on-off motor have haunted him from the day he entered the NBA and in both his previous stops. The Lakers are severely undermanned right now, with Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves out for the remainder of the season and potentially beyond. Redick's team has dropped to the No. 4 seed after three consecutive losses, and it could still lose home-court advantage in the first round if the Houston Rockets pass it.
