In his first season of having advertised offensive guru Liam Coen as his head coach, Trevor Lawrence of the Jacksonville Jaguars largely played like the quarterback the Jaguars likely believed they had when they signed him to a five-year contract extension worth up to $275M in June 2024.
During a recent conversation with SiriusXM NFL Radio, Coen offered somewhat of a warning for the rest of the league regarding what Lawrence can become in the current Jacksonville offensive system.
"Go throughout the season, and you find out, I mean, doesn't miss a single practice, doesn't miss a single throw in practice, played the whole season," Coen said about Lawrence, per Kevin Patra of the NFL's website. "Obviously, MVP finalist, Comeback Player of the Year finalist, did some great things. There is so much room to continue to improve."
As Coen referenced, Lawrence finished fifth in MVP voting for the 2025 regular season and fourth in voting for the Comeback Player of the Year Award. According to Pro Football Reference, Lawrence ranked sixth in the NFL with 4,007 passing yards and fifth with 29 touchdowns through the air.
Lawrence then helped the Jaguars grab a 24-20 lead over the Buffalo Bills with roughly four minutes remaining in regulation of a wild-card playoff showdown this past January. However, Buffalo's Josh Allen guided the Bills on a nine-play, 66-yard drive that ended with the one-time MVP scoring a late rushing touchdown.
"I think that's what we're excited about attacking, but when you start with A) humility and B) toughness, mentally and physically, I think you can do a lot with a quarterback," Coen added. "We spent a lot of time in San Francisco at the Super Bowl going through that week, and I got to see a different side of him, hang out with him in a different lens, and I'm really excited about working with Trevor again this year."
As of Wednesday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook had Lawrence as a +2200 betting underdog to claim MVP Award honors for the upcoming regular season. It sounds like Coen thinks some may want to take a flier on Lawrence before those odds change this coming fall.
