Jon Sumrall, Florida Gators rolling on recruiting trail with addition of elite QB

The Florida Gators have to feel like they're building something special as part of Jon Sumrall's first recruiting class.

On Wednesday, the Gators picked up a massive commitment from five-star offensive lineman Maxwell Hiller. According to the 247Sports Composite, Hiller is the No. 4 overall recruit in the country. He chose Sumrall and the Gators over Alabama, Ohio State and Tennessee.

A day later, it's being reported that one of the top quarterback recruits in the country will be joining the Gators.

On Thursday, Davin Davidson, a four-star quarterback from Sarasota, Florida, committed to the Gators.

“This one just felt different,” Davidson told Rivals regarding his decision. “It started last year when I went to Florida four or five times. I liked it with the old staff too. Then every time I was around Florida, it felt natural. It felt like where I’m supposed to be. The more I visited, the more it felt like home.”

This is a big recruiting win for Sumrall and the Gators, especially when considering the fact that Davidson is one of the top recruits from the state.

Florida Gators get big in-state recruiting win

In-state recruiting is crucial at Florida, especially because Mario Cristobal has the Miami Hurricanes humming and the Florida State Seminoles are never too far away from being a powerhouse.

To that point, Miami was one of the other programs in the running in this one. The Georgia Bulldogs had a shot, too.

Davidson is ranked as the No. 13 quarterback in the 2027 class and the No. 15 overall player from the talent-laden state of Florida, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.

He led his high school, Cardinal Mooney, to a state title this past season while throwing for 2,360 yards and 23 touchdowns compared to six interceptions.

“They showed me I was a priority — not just showed me, but told me,” Davidson said of the Gators. “At junior day, I got to see the new staff and players in person, and the energy stood out. Everybody looked like they wanted to be there.”

He's now Florida's fifth 2027 commitment.
