Reds offense finally wakes up with four-homer night against Giants

For the most part, the Cincinnati Reds have struggled to score runs this season and have been unable to take advantage of solid pitching.

In Wednesday's 8-3 win over the San Francisco Giants (6-12) — their second straight victory in the series — there was plenty offense from the opening pitch.

The Reds (11-7) scored seven of their eight runs in the first two innings and outhit the Giants, 10-9, one night after only recording three total hits in a 2-1 win on Tuesday.

Sal Stewart leads Reds' offensive outburst

Stewart continued his hot start to the season in Tuesday's win with his fifth home run of the season, which is the most among National League rookies.

On Wednesday, he added two more home runs and six RBI, all of which were in the first two innings of the game. Stewart got the scoring started with this three-run shot in the first off a 94-mph four-seam fastball from starter Tyler Mahle — who began his career with the Reds.

In his next at-bat the following inning, Stewart hit another three-run homer off a 95-mph four-seam fastball from Mahle to extend Cincinnati's lead to 7-2.

According to the team's X account, Stewart is the first rookie in franchise history with a pair of three-run homers in a game. The historic play from Stewart does not stop there, though.

The 22-year-old now has seven homers this season and 12 dating back to his 18 starts after being called up last season. Those are the most long shots by a Reds hitter through his first 36 games since Aristides Aquino hit 15 in 2018-19.

Stewart was not the only one who contributed to the explosive bats on Wednesday. Third baseman Eugenio Suarez followed Stewart's three-run shot in the first with a 349-foot solo homer to right field.

That was Suarez's 192nd career homer as a Red, moving past Brandon Phillips for 12th on the all-time list. It was also his first three-hit game since rejoining the franchise after spending the last four seasons with the Seattle Mariners and Arizona Diamondbacks.

With the Reds leading 7-2 in the fourth, shortstop Elly De La Cruz crushed a 442-foot solo home run to center field to make it an 8-2 game.

Starting pitcher Rhett Lowder went 6.2 innings and allowed five hits, three earned runs, one walk and four strikeouts on 90 pitches. His solid outing, in addition to a collective bullpen effort that did not allow a single run, was the latest efficient performance from the pitching staff.

Unlike the majority of the season up to this point, though, the bats came alive and provided some much-needed relief. Stewart once again played a huge role, but he had some help around him as the Reds go into Thursday's game looking for the series sweep of the Giants.
