Michigan QB Bryce Underwood's performance in spring game may be concerning

The Michigan Wolverines don't have a quarterback problem on their hands just yet, but it's worth noting that former star recruit Bryce Underwood has been a bit underwhelming.

He has elite upside. That much is for certain. Underwood is also an elite athlete.

He was the consensus No. 1 overall recruit in the 2025 recruiting class, and the Wolverines are paying him handsomely to be their quarterback.

That's why his freshman season was a bit concerning.

Underwood threw for 2,428 yards and 11 touchdowns with nine interceptions. His average passer rating of 126.65 was the 94th-worst amongst all qualified quarterbacks. His completion percentage of 60.3% was tied for 88th worst.

Underwood then went out in Michigan's spring game last weekend and completed just three of nine passes for 22 total yards.

That's why Stewart Mandel of "The Athletic" believes there should be some concern surrounding Underwood, even though that performance came in what is essentially a scrimmage.

"In my experience, the guys who play well in the fall don’t generally bomb in the spring game. And for that reason, I’m nervous about Bryce Underwood, too," Mandell wrote.

2026 an important season for Bryce Underwood and Michigan Wolverines

Notably, Underwood has a new head coach in Kyle Whittingham, and he has a new offensive coordinator in Jason Beck.

He's learning a new system, and he does have time. He's gotta figure it out this offseason, though, because year two is incredibly important for his development, and it's a big year for Whittingham in his first season as Michigan's head coach.

"Underwood has the whole summer and preseason camp to get into the flow of Beck’s offense and build rapport with his receivers," Beck wrote. "Unfortunately, though, it’s the one scrimmage everyone saw, so that will be our lasting image of Underwood for the next four months."

Underwood checks in at 6-foot-4, 228 pounds, and he's one heck of an athlete. To that point, he rushed 88 times for 392 yards and six touchdowns as well.

He's got to get his abilities as a passer down, though. That's what these next four months must focus on for him in Ann Arbor, but that's easier said than done.
