When Wendell Carter, Jr. delivered a hard foul to Jalen Duren during the third quarter of the Detroit Pistons' 98-83 win over the Orlando Magic, there was speculation online that the move was about more than basketball.
Carter's girlfriend, WNBA star Angel Reese, allegedly dated Duren briefly two years ago. Reese's social media post after Orlando's Game 1 upset suggests that there remains some bitterness on and off the court from the two starting centers.
Orlando shocked the top-seeded Pistons with a 112-101 victory in the series opener. Carter was a star, putting up 17 points, seven rebounds and five assists, and a game-high plus/minus of +20, while holding Duren to just eight points on four shots, with three turnovers.
Reese, who was recently traded to the Atlanta Dream, went viral after celebrating Carter's big win on her Instagram story. Observers saw significance in her choice of images: A photo of Carter about to deliver an alley-oop dunk over Duren's head.

It was one of Carter's top plays of the game, but X.com was full of posts claiming she'd intentionally chosen an image of Carter "bodying" her ex-boyfriend. It may have lit a fire under the Pistons' first-time All-Star.
Duren's stat line wasn't huge Wednesday night, with 11 points and nine rebounds, but he was the anchor of a stingy Pistons defense that held the Magic to 33 percent shooting for the game. Carter struggled, scoring only three points on 1-for-6 shooting on a night where he was in constant foul trouble.
His one basket came when Duren dribbled the ball off his foot, and Carter took it in for a dunk, then delivered a huge smile. Dunks might simply mean more to him against Duren.

With the Pistons on a 20-3 run in the third quarter, Carter picked up his fifth foul by hitting Duren on his way to the hoop, a play that was upgraded to a flagrant foul due to Carter's windup. It also felt like a call made to calm down a chippy game that featured 48 fouls, five technicals and a flagrant.

The tension in the series was already high. Both teams play physical defense and aren't afraid to scrap with other teams, with Desmond Bane the biggest instigator on the Magic and Isaiah Stewart a frequent brawler for the Pistons.
Now there may be some extra off-court motivation for the battle in the paint. The first shots may have been fired on social media, but the rest of the battle between Carter and Duren will be determined in the low post.
