Ronny Mauricio has been unable to establish himself at the major league level with the New York Mets. That may be about to change.
Anthony DiComo from MLB.com reported that shortstop Francisco Lindor will miss significant time due to his calf injury. As a result, Mauricio will see the majority of the action at short.
The Mets seemingly had a built-in option at short already on the roster. Third baseman Bo Bichette had been a shortstop throughout his career heading into this season, and would have been a natural choice to shift over.
Such a move would allow Brett Baty and Mark Vientos to return to third, which was their original position when they broke into the majors.
The Mets don't have a clear timetable yet on Francisco Lindor's calf injury, but they expect him to miss significant time. It's more serious than Juan Soto's was.

Ronny Mauricio is going to get a long run at shortstop to prove himself in Lindor's absence, per Carlos Mendoza.
Mauricio had been a highly regarded prospect earlier in his professional career, and he was a consensus top-100 prospect from 2020 through 2022. He had been lauded for his plus raw power, but there were questions regarding his overall hit tool. Mauricio had also been lauded for his instincts and strong arm at short, but there was the possibility he would be forced to third base due to Lindor's presence.
The positives and negatives from Mauricio's scouting report have played out during his time in the majors. He had posted a .234/.294/.359 batting line in his 296 plate appearances entering Thursday, hitting eight homers and 10 doubles. Mauricio has served as a utility infielder when he has gotten a chance, seeing time at second, third and short.
The Mets may have an opening at third base in 2027 as Bichette has an opt-out clause at the end of this season. If Mauricio can make an impact in the lineup, he could get a chance to take over at the hot corner should Bichette exercise his ability to opt out of the contract.
