Five best fits from Day 2 of 2026 NFL Draft

The second day of the 2026 NFL Draft is in the books after selections were made in Rounds 2-3 on Friday.

Here are five of the best fits from the night as some teams addressed roster needs better than others.

Houston Texans defensive tackle Kayden McDonald (No. 36 overall)

With the potential of the New York Giants upgrading their defensive line at No. 36, the Texans traded up to get the former Ohio State DT. While the Texans excelled on the edge last season, their interior was not where it needed to be on one of the league's best defenses.

McDonald was projected to go in the first round and is the top player at his position in the draft. Despite the slide into the second round, McDonald was invited back to the green room to hear his name called by commissioner Roger Goodell. His emotion was clear in an interview with ESPN's Laura Rutledge.

"I'm just so thankful, just so emotional like, where I came from now I'm here," McDonald said. "It's a blessing."

According to Sports Info Solutions data, McDonald has the physical tools, play strength and hand usage to be a disruptive force. He should fit in well and only continue to grow with the talent around him.

Miami Dolphins linebacker Jacob Rodriguez (No. 43 overall)

As defensive-minded head coach Jeff Hafley takes over in Miami, the addition of Rodriguez makes perfect sense. The Dolphins are in a complete rebuild mode and certainly eased some of their concerns by selecting the former Texas Tech Red Raider at No. 43.

Rodriguez was the best LB in college football last season, accumulating 128 tackles, one sack, six passes defended, four interceptions, seven forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries (one for a TD). His size is an issue, but Rodriguez is an excellent fit in Miami.

Atlanta Falcons cornerback Avieon Terrell (No. 48 overall)

The Falcons came into the draft with the CB position as one of their priorities. They addressed that by selecting the former Clemson CB at No. 48. He led the Tigers with five forced fumbles last season and has the speed, reactive athleticism, transition quickness and ball skills to become a starting corner in the NFL. (h/t SIS

Furthermore, Terrell joins his older brother, A.J., in the Falcons' secondary. With similar smooth cover skills and the familial ties on the team with his older brother, Terrell offers secondary depth and slot potential.

New York Jets cornerback D'Angelo Ponds (No. 50 overall)

The Jets will certainly take anything they can get at this point after another dismal season, and the standout from the national-champion Indiana Hoosiers is an excellent start. Ponds had 60 tackles, 10 passes defended, two interceptions (one for a TD) and one forced fumble last season, and particularly excels in zone coverage.

At only 5-foot-8, Ponds is the smallest corner drafted in the top 50 since HC Aaron Glenn went 12th overall in 1994. The size concerns are clear, but for a team that had zero interceptions last season, he is the type of player the Jets need.

Carolina Panthers wide receiver Chris Brazzell II (No. 83 overall)

The Tennessee standout could have easily gone much earlier than No. 83, and the Panthers took advantage of his slide. At 6-foot-4, Brazzell has the length to be successful in the league and also has the release package and explosiveness out of breaks that make him hard to defend (h/t SIS). He is a third-round steal for Carolina and a huge addition to its WR room.
