Jon Sumrall doesn't want to hear about "building" the Florida Gators back up. Clearly, this is not something he wants to take time.
Sumrall was hired by Florida after going 43-12 over the past four seasons at Troy and then Tulane, because the Gators believe he can win, and win big.
He took Tulane to the College Football Playoff last season and won the American Conference Championship.
Surely, he can replicate that success at Florida and in the SEC, right?
In reality, that may prove to be easier said than done, but Sumrall is heading into his first season as head coach of the Gators with clear expectations.
He's not looking to slowly build this thing back up. It's all about winning in Gainesville, and Sumrall is right on message with that.
“Yeah, I’ve got expectations to win every game we play,” Sumrall said in a recent interview with Action Sports Jax (h/t On3). “That’s my expectation. Like I’m not comfortable with anybody going, ‘Hey, how many games are you comfortable winning this year?’ If anybody tells me, ‘Hey, bowl eligible,’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, we better be or I’ll be on top of the stadium getting ready to do something stupid.'”

Is it a bit over the top for a first-year SEC head coach? Yes, it probably is.
Is that a breath of fresh air for the Gators after they suffered through the mediocrity of the Billy Napier era, though?
Absolutely. It has to be.
This doesn't mean that Florida is going to win the CFP in year one of the Sumrall era, and the Gators aren't even among the favorites to compete in the SEC.
The expectations are always high at Florida, though, and it's worth noting that the Gators have yet to make the playoffs in this CFP era.
That's over 10 years without a CFP appearance, let alone a CFP win.
You can bet that talking point will be loud and clear in the Gators' locker room under Sumrall.
“To me you have to have urgency every day,” he explained. “And I think as soon as you put a ceiling or a cap on what you can do and start to think with limits in mind, you’re automatically handicapping yourself. So for me our expectation is for our guys to expect to win every freaking time we take the field.”
