Happy birthday to one of the most iconic players in Major League Baseball history, Willie Mays!
Mays made a staggering 24 All-Star teams in his career, winning 12 Gold Gloves, two MVP awards, a Rookie of the Year, a batting title, a Roberto Clemente award and a World Series title in 1954.
Mays began his professional career in the Negro Legues with the Birmingam Black Barons in 1948 before even graduating high school, and by 1951 he won National League Rookie of the Year for the then-New York Giants.
He wouldn’t earn an All-Star nod until he returned from military service for the 1954 season, but he’d be one every season from 1954 to 1973. Over his career he’d mash 660 home runs and 1,909 RBIs to go with 3,293 hits. He also made one of the most famous catches in MLB history at the Polo Grounds in the 1954 World Series.
Mays was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1979 and lived to be 93 years old, passing away on June 18, 2024.
Which brings us to today’s quiz. Mays is one of 28 players to hit at least 500 home runs in their MLB career. How many of those players can you name in five minutes?
Good luck!
