The 'NFL all-time passing leaders' quiz

Happy 42nd birthday to former No.1-overall NFL Draft pick, three-time Pro Bowler and 2020 AP Comeback Player of the Year, Alex Smith!

Smith was taken with the first-overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft out of Utah by the San Francisco 49ers, where injuries and poor rosters meant he got off to a rough start to his career. He went 2-5 as a starter in 2005 before improving to 7-9 in his first full season as an NFL starting quarterback in 2006. But a shoulder injury cost him all but seven games in 2007 and the entire 2008 campaign, and he wouldn’t start a full-16 game season again until 2011.

That was his first truly successful season, with the Niners going 13-3 and Smith eclipsing 3,000 passing-yards for the first time in his career. But in 2012, he suffered a concussion that led to Colin Kaepernick taking over the starting gig and leading San Francisco to the Super Bowl.

He was then shipped to Kansas City, where he started for five years and reached the 4,000-yard milestone for the first time in 2017. There he also mentored a young Patrick Mahomes before finishing his career in the nation’s capital with Washington. He suffered a horrific broken leg that was subsequently infected that kept him out for most of 2018 and all of 2019. He returned in 2020, playing in eight games and going 5-1 in his final six starts of his career.

Smith retired after the 2020 season, when he was named the AP Comeback Player of the Year.

Which brings us to today’s quiz. Smith retired as one of 36 quarterbacks in NFL history to rack up more than 35,000 passing yards in his career. How many of those quarterbacks can you name in six minutes?

Good luck!
