Cal HC Tosh Lupoi's new commit, Duvay Williams, getting comparisons to NFL athletes

New head coach Tosh Lupoi has a lot of work to do to bring the Cal Golden Bears back to some semblance of relevance in college football.

Getting big recruiting wins on the recruiting trail is a great start, though, and Lupoi and Cal just did that with a commitment from four-star cornerback Duvay Williams.

Williams, from Inglewood, California, is one of the top athletes in the country and one of the best players from his talent-laden state.

He can play wide receiver or cornerback, but the Bears plan to use him at corner at the college level. According to the 247Sports Composite, he's ranked as the No. 31 cornerback in the 2027 class.

Williams committed to Lupoi and the Golden Bears on Wednesday.

UCLA and Arizona State were also in the running for his commitment.

Duvay Williams has drawn comparisons to elite NFL athletes from Serra High School

Now a two-way standout for Inglewood High School, Williams spent the first three years of his high school life at Junipero Serra High School in Gardena, California.

Serra has produced several elite athletes over the years who went on to play in the NFL, and Williams has drawn comparisons to those players.

"[He] was being compared early on to a couple of former Cavalier two-way standouts in Adoree Jackson and Robert Woods," wrote Greg Biggins of Rivals. "He was a rare freshman starter at Serra and was already a national recruit at the time."

The only downside for Williams as a recruit right now is that he's only 5-foot-10, 148 pounds. That's just not going to cut it at the college level, though he does have a whole season to bulk up while finding a way to keep his athleticism intact.

Cal now has a cornerback committed who could very well be a star in a few seasons, though. At the very least, he's a multi-talented athlete who can help the Golden Bears in multiple ways — even as a freshman.

"He’s a true three-phase playmaker who offers value as a return man as well," wrote Biggins. "He’s a high-IQ player who knows how to play the game and shows off high-end football instincts."
