The Dallas Cowboys haven’t been a true Super Bowl contender in years. They’ve revamped their defense and kept their high-octane offense together, so that might change this season.
However, they don’t have many clear avenues for improvement if that’s not the case. If they struggle again, they will have to make some tough decisions. According to NFL insider Albert Breer, that’s why they might consider making a bold move in the Supplemental NFL Draft.
In his latest mailbag session, he argued that Jerry Jones might be intrigued by Brendan Sorsby if he declares for that event.
"There’s also the other piece of this: Prescott will turn 34 next summer, has been banged up, and the time could be coming to put an heir apparent into the pipeline. If you’re Dallas, would you throw a second- or third-round supplemental pick out there this summer for Brendan Sorsby, should he declare? It’s worth thinking about, anyway," Breer wrote.
Sorsby might lose his college eligibility after being caught placing thousands of wagers throughout the course of his career. He was supposed to start for the Texas Tech Red Raiders this season after transferring from Cincinnati, and he’s currently in rehab to address his issues with gambling.
The 22-year-old could opt to enter the Supplemental NFL Draft, but as such, he’d become a league employee and thus subject to the NFL’s conduct policy. That means he would probably be suspended upon signing his rookie deal.
Even so, Sorsby is projected to be a first-round pick in 2027, so multiple teams, including the Cowboys, would certainly be intrigued by the possibility of getting him if that becomes a real possibility.
