Cowboys need to solve this problem to succeed in 2026

The Dallas Cowboys made some stellar moves during the 2026 NFL draft, and one was bringing on UCF edge rusher Malachi Lawrence in the first round.

But, one ESPN analyst doesn't think it's quite enough.

Following the Cowboys' action-packed draft and the still looming hole from trading Micah Parsons last year, ESPN's Aaron Schatz stated in a Thursday piece that Dallas absolutely needs to still address their edge rusher position before September and calls it the team's biggest roster weaknesses heading into the 2026-27 run.

"The Cowboys have a surprisingly solid two-deep across their depth chart. Edge rusher is a position that isn't a hole, per se, but definitely has questions," Schatz stated in the piece.

It's not all doom and gloom, though. Schatz says that Lawrence "is a promising rookie, but he's still a rookie."

Frankly, while the edge rusher position is still in flux, it's worth nothing that the Cowboys do have solid depth across their roster in pretty much every other position. This is a team that wasn't in a need of a full rebuild, either. They just needed a makeover going into the draft, and that's what they got.

So, edge rusher is the spot that sits closest to a question mark, but it's not a disaster. It's just a room with some unanswered questions.

Between Lawrence, Rashan Gary, Donovan Ezeiruaku, James Houston and Marist Liufau, the Dallas Cowboys have plenty of potential. But, they could use a veteran edge.
