The Toronto Maple Leafs got to work in recent days, and after hiring a new general manager and a hockey operations advisor, it remains to be determined who will be the coach for next season.
According to TSN's Pierre LeBrun, the new GM John Chayka is set to meet with Maple Leafs coach Craig Berube this weekend to discuss his future.
LeBrun commented that Chayka would be comfortable with keeping Berube in his position, going against the trend of placing the coach out of the Leafs starting in the 2026-27 season.
"If I had to handicap it, I think John Chayka will be comfortable keeping Craig Berube as their head coach," LeBrun said on Thursday's edition of "OverDrive," where he joined Mark Roe, Jamie McLennan, and Jason Strudwick to discuss the future of the Canadian franchise.
While waiting to see what happens with Berube, the Leafs would have to immediately define the future of their stars, such as forwards Auston Matthews and William Nylander. Both players have active contracts, but in recent weeks, there has been speculation about their future, given the unstable situation they were going through in Toronto.
Last week, the Leafs stepped forward by officially naming John Chayka as the new GM, while Mats Sundin became the new senior executive advisor for hockey operations.
"Today is an important day for the Toronto Maple Leafs organization," said MLSE President and CEO Keith Pelley last Sunday. "I'm thrilled to welcome John and Mats to their roles, two great hockey minds that will strengthen our entire hockey club."
Leafs fans have made themselves heard on social media, expressing their discontent and skepticism about Pelley's decisions regarding the hiring of Chayka, as well as their rejection of keeping Berube on the bench. They evidently will not like LeBrun's recent report.
