It's no secret that fourth-year Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson Sr. would like to be traded to a team willing to give him a fresh start this spring.
No such trade has yet materialized, and Richardson recently reported to the Colts for voluntary workouts. While speaking with reporters on Wednesday, Colts offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter addressed the club's plans for Richardson.
"Anthony showed up here ready to work this week and, shoot, we’re gonna get some good work out of him and try to get him better and get him opportunities to go work his drills and get some throws and all that good stuff," Cooter explained, per Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk.
The Colts declined the fifth-year option for 2027 attached to Richardson's contract, so he is on track to become an unrestricted free agent next offseason. He seemingly has no long-term future with Indianapolis after the club signed starting signal-caller Daniel Jones to a two-year, $88M contract that could be worth up to $100M this offseason. Jones is still recovering from the torn Achilles he suffered this past December, but 2025 sixth-round pick Riley Leonard has seemingly replaced Richardson as the Colts' QB2.
"We work through how we want to do that thing," Cooter said about how the Colts will split reps between Richardson and Leonard. "Who’s with what group is not any sort of news I’m trying to break here today, but guys are out there getting work. There’s reps to go all around. There’s throws to make. There’s reps to get in drills. Those guys are all part of the thing and getting reps."
A recent report suggested that no team currently wants to take a flier on Richardson at a discounted price because "he has a lot of work to do to reestablish his value as an NFL quarterback." There continues to be no indication that the Colts will release the 23-year-old anytime soon, so trying to impress his coaches by looking good during springtime workouts is likely his best option at the moment.
