Somewhat out of nowhere, the New York Mets clinched their fourth win across five games when they notched a 10-5 victory in chilly conditions at the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday night.
That result only improved the Mets to 14-22 on what's been a disappointing season for the Amazins, but manager Carlos Mendoza has nevertheless noticed a change in the club as of late.
"It’s good to see the guys out there playing loose, playing with confidence, and just playing their games -- they aren’t trying to do too much right now," Mendoza explained, per John Flanigan of SNY. "You watch the at-bats, watch them in the dugout, during the game, pregame -- they are playing the game the way they are capable of -- there’s a lot of smiles on their faces, so it’s just good to see them having fun."
The Mets hadn't been having much fun amid an injury crisis that has several key contributors out of the lineup. Perhaps most importantly, shortstop Francisco Lindor isn't expected to return anytime soon as he continues to recover from a worrisome calf issue.
The Rockies are 14-23, so no opponent should take victory laps due to earning wins over Colorado this spring. That said, Mets second baseman Marcus Semien seems to believe that completing a series at Coors Field could be just the thing to spark a club that began Thursday ranked 29th in MLB with 132 runs scored this season, according to ESPN stats.
"You want to have good games in this ballpark," Semien said after he produced four hits and a bomb of a home run on Wednesday. "It’s a good place to hit. It’s a big outfield, and the ball carries."
After the Mets finish their series at the Rockies on Thursday, New York will begin a three-game tilt at the Arizona Diamondbacks (17-18) on Friday. In April, the Mets dropped two of three to the Diamondbacks for what proved to be the start of a 12-game losing streak for the National League East club.
