Steve Kerr, Warriors make major decision regarding their future

After weeks of speculation and negotiations, the Golden State Warriors and head coach Steve Kerr have made a decision on their future together: Kerr is coming back.

According to a report from ESPN's Shams Charania on Saturday, Kerr and the Warriors have agreed to a new two-year contract extension that will not only keep him on the Warriors bench but will also keep him as the NBA's highest-paid coach.

Steve Kerr returning to the Warriors

Kerr has been the Warriors' head coach since the start of the 2014-15 season, and since then has helped build the organization into one of the most dominant ones in the entire NBA.

Under Kerr's watch, the Warriors have appeared in six NBA finals, winning four of them, including their most recent championship during the 2021-22 season.

But as the core of the roster has gotten older, including the departure of Klay Thompson, the playoff success has dried up. Their future as a contender has been a topic of discussion this week, thanks to Draymond Green's appearance on "Inside the NBA," resulting in a back-and-forth between him and Charles Barkley.

The Warriors have not advanced to the Western Conference Finals since that 2022 championship and have missed the playoffs entirely in four of the past seven years.

That is not necessarily a reflection on Kerr as a coach, as much as it is the passage of time and the cyclical nature of professional sports. Nobody stays on top of the mountain forever, and the Warriors have clearly taken a step or two below the current top teams in the NBA. For now, Kerr is going to be the person tasked with getting them back to the top.
